Gymnasium

History of the current Gymnasium building

The State Reform Real Gymnasium was established in Nový Jičín in 1921, correcting the fragmentation of primary and secondary education in the town. It was for this purpose that the so-called Palacký Schools were built in 1926. Construction began in 1925 according to plans by the architect Vahala from Hustopece nad Bečvou. The work itself was carried out by Kučera and Dvořák from Moravská Ostrava for three and a half million crowns. In 1926, the construction of the gymnasium itself began, a symmetrical building, but separate from the burgher schools. In front of them, the directors' villas were built. It was not until 1934 and 1935 that the two schools were joined by the extension of the municipal school. Students from the surrounding area attended the new grammar school. One of the most famous students was the son of Count Kinský, whose father regularly drove him from Lešné u Valašského Meziříčí to study. Just a few days after the end of the Second World War, on 27 May 1945, new classes began at the Palacký School. There were two burgher schools, a real grammar school, a two-year business school and a music school in the buildings. In 1955 a new pedagogical school was established in the Palacký Schools. In the following years, many changes took place, as a result of which the whole building eventually became the seat of the Nový Jičín Grammar School only.
