Circular Avenue

Circular Avenue

The enchantment of Vienna, the famous era of the "Ringstrasse", has also left its indelible mark in Nový Jičín. In 1879, the city fathers began to demolish unsightly houses and build a beautiful boulevard around the perimeter of the historic centre. Perhaps in no other city does the Circular Avenue form such a self-evident and perfect harmony of historicist and Art Nouveau architecture with the original urban area. However, due to the war, it was never completed. The construction of the Circular Avenue began in 1879 on the site of the current city office at 1 Divadelní Street. The Neo-Renaissance building from 1879 to 1880 was built according to the plans of the Viennese architect Otto Thienemann. Circular Avenue is dominated by the Neo-Renaissance building of the girls' municipal and burgher school, today's Tyršova Primary School at 1 Tyršova Street, the work of architects Heinrich Claus and Moritz Hintiträger. The famous "Ringstrasse" era also influenced the dwelling of the builder Josef Blum, who had a house built here in 1891, the so-called Blum Villa at 1 Štefánikova Street. At present, it houses, among other things, a veterinarian's office.
