Statue of St. Nicholas
After more than 100 years, a replica of the statue of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of merchants, children and Nový Jičín, has returned to the square. Its current author is the academic sculptor Jiří Finger. The saint's attributes include apples and a bible. St. Nicholas of Nový Jičín holds a bible in his left hand and tilts it towards a bowl of clean water.
There is a legend associated with St Nicholas that tells of three purses of gold coins that Nicholas threw through an open window in the middle of the night into the house of an indebted merchant, thus saving his three daughters from slavery. These three life-saving purses are symbolised by three larger-than-life apples rolled around a fountain.
Saint Nicholas now oversees the peaceful life of the inhabitants of Nový Jičín.
