Tourist information center Of Nový Jičín

The Nový Jičín Region has over 200 km of sign-posted cycle-routes. The Moravian Gate long distance route (no. 5) forms the main axis and is part of the European-wide cycle-route network. It copies the historic “Amber Road” linking the Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea. A dense network of regional and local cycle-routes is connected to it.

There are two main cycle-routes passing through Nový Jičín. Route no. 6175 Kunín – Hostašovice, called “Palacký’s Trail“, from north to south and route no. 502 Starý Jičín – Hukvaldy from west to east. In addition to this, alternative municipal cycle-routes 6175A and 502A lead cyclists through the town centre.

PALACKÝ’S TRAIL

Palacký’s Trail cycle-route also has educational value, because it travels parallel to the František Palacký National History Educational Trail. However, the cycle-route begins in the village of Kunín. František Palacký was a student at the Youth Educational Institute, which was established at the chateau in Kunín by Countess Maria Walburg of Truchess-Zeil. Today Kunín Chateau is one of the most important Baroque chateaus in Moravia. Continue through Šenov u Nového Jičína, the birthplace of Franz Barwig, known chiefly as the author of the Dancing Kunvald People sculpture on the fountain on the square in Nový Jičín, to reach Nový Jičín. After seeing the town continue over Svinec Hill, which is the site of several abundant springs of excellent, very calcareous potable water, known collectively as “Oční studánka” (Eye Spring), to Kojetín. There is a major archaeological site called Požaha, which is a typical example of a type of submarine volcanic activity from the Early Cretaceous period, above Kojetín. Then we come to Straník, near which there is a natural monument, which is the result of ancient volcanic activity resulting in pillow lava formations; a unique natural phenomenon in the Czech Republic. The route leads from Straník to the village of Hostašovice, which is traversed by the Main European Watershed. The local points of interest include the porridge mill, which still grinds buckwheat into buckwheat porridge today. Buckwheat has been grown and processed here since the end of the 18th century. There are also two natural monuments near the village – both important wetland meadow communities - one called “Domorazské louky (meadows)” and the other “Prameny Zrzávky” (Zrzávka Springs) – five mineral springs, preserved natural meadow communities and the adjoining wetland meadows. A unique dual spring of ferrous and sulphurous water also rises here. Past Hostašovice the Palacký’s Trail cycle-route connects to cycle-route no. 6016, along which you can cycle to Frenštat pod Radhoštěm or to Rožnov pod Radhoštěm.
