From history
When the war with Turkey began in 1788, Laudon surprisingly did not appear in the army. It was only combat setbacks that forced the emperor, who had taken the lead of the armies, to call the old marshal back into the field. In August 1788 Laudon arrived at the front and took charge of operations in Croatia. The army prepared a stormy welcome for "Father" Laudon. With his arrival came a decisive change in the conduct of the war. After the winter break, Laudon resumed the campaign and on 8 July 1789 took the fortress of Berbir. In September he moved on to Belgrade. After a three-week siege and heavy bombardment, the garrison of the fortress surrendered on 7 October. Laudon's arrival in Vienna in December 1789 was triumphant. He was at the height of his popularity. In the eyes of his contemporaries, the liberator of Belgrade was considered the successor of Austria's most famous warrior, Prince Eugene of Savoy.
