Stations of the Cross Nový Jičín - Štramberk
The Way of the Cross is officially called "Via Crucis - the Way of Life". It is a nature trail built by the Jesuits in the 17th century. In 2013 it was reconstructed. You can find out more about it at www.mladeznj.signaly.cz.
Wandering the Way of the Cross
There are not many possibilities to choose the Way of the Cross as your walking route. In our region, such an opportunity is offered to you. The Way of the Cross leads from Nový Jičín to Štramberk. It is 8.5 kilometres long, all its stops are clearly marked on the map and mostly follow the cycle path No. 502.
The route starts with an initial stop at the chapel at the end of Slezská Street near the Nový Jičín town cemetery. After less than a kilometre, you will reach a turn-off which will take you to a dirt road. This path is bordered by wooden stakes. It leads to the second stop on the outskirts of the village of Rybí. To the III stop, which is at the bend below the pub, you will go around the main road.
If you follow a side road in these places, you will find yourself at stop IV. The chapel is located by the stream and faces the forest. Next to it, a footbridge arches over the stream. It is followed by a stony path that will lead you to the V. stop at the other end of the village.
The Way of the Cross continues along the main road towards Štramberk. It will lead you to the 6th stop, located near the gasworks. Just a little further on, under the wooden church of St. Catherine, is the turn-off to Libotín. After a short walk you will reach the cross of the VIIth stop. As a bonus, you will have a beautiful view of the Kotouč mountain.
From here you can head straight to Štramberk. The path leads through Horní Bašta with stop VIII and to the information centre, near which, by the main road, there is also the chapel of stop IX. The Xth stop awaits you in the National Orchard, next to the primary school. From there, follow the tarmac path past the cemetery to the quarry gate.
Here you will join the forest path on the right hand side, which will lead you to the XIth stop. Now comes the final stage of the Way of the Cross - the climb to the top of the mountain. The route leads through the forest and is physically demanding. After crossing the steepest part of the hill, you will reach the cross of the XIIth stop. You will be only a short distance away from climbing the hill. At the very top of the Kotouč Mountain, the XIIIth and XIVth stops are also the end of the Way of the Cross - our Via Crucis.
