He was a prominent industrialist, municipal politician, architect and traveller. In 1910 he was appointed an honorary citizen of Nový Jičín. Together with his younger brothers, he ran the company J. Hückel's Söhne in Nový Jičín, which was the largest manufacturer of hats in Austria-Hungary at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The company was nationalised in 1945 and production was taken over by the state-owned Tonak.
