Orava Castle (Slovakia)
Basic Information
One of the biggest tourist attractions in northern Slovakia is Orava Castle, built on a rock above the Orava River in Oravský Podzámok, also known as the “Eagle’s Nest.”
Construction of the castle began on the site of an old wooden fortress following the Tatar invasion in 1241. Over the course of the following centuries, the original small 13th-century fortress evolved into an extensive castle complex, which today comprises 154 rooms. In the past, it served as the castle and seat of the Orava Castle Estate, which controlled nearly the entire Orava region. The castle’s buildings and interiors feature elements of the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and modern styles. In fact, the castle remains a living complex whose development continues to this day.
Orava Castle consists of a series of buildings that follow the contours of the castle hill and the rock face. In 1556, it came into the hands of the Thurzov family, who carried out its most extensive reconstruction. Orava Castle took on its present form in 1611.
After the Thurzov family died out, it had several owners who, however, took very little care of it. The castle suffered its greatest disaster in 1800, when it burned down and became unnecessary for its owners. Extensive reconstruction to save the castle did not begin until after World War II.
Today, the castle grounds form a remarkable complex comprising the Lower, Middle, and Upper Castles, complete with palaces, fortifications, and a tower. Visitors will be fascinated by the connection between the three entrance gates via a tunnel, beneath which lie underground passages.
The Orava Castle grounds house several exhibitions. In the oldest parts of the Upper Castle—in the Citadel—houses an archaeological exhibition and a media library that catalogs audiovisual works filmed at Orava Castle. The ethnographic and natural history exhibitions are particularly interesting parts of the display. The historical exhibition consists of the castle’s medieval and Renaissance structures and their chronological context. Visitors will be captivated by St. Michael’s Chapel and the Orava Castle Treasury, both located within the Lower Castle.
The nighttime tours of Orava Castle are very popular during the peak tourist season and are enlivened by theatrical performances.
Cooperation
Cross-border cooperation brought Nový Jičín together with Orava Castle—located 170 kilometers away—or rather with representatives of the Orava Museum, many years ago, and the friendship has been maintained to this day. The city of Nový Jičín established contacts with representatives of the Orava Museum, which oversees the castle, at a tourism trade fair in Zabrze, Poland. There, they also agreed on a joint project in which the playgrounds in Nový Jičín served as a model for a recreational area below Orava Castle in Slovakia. As part of this collaboration, the Orava Museum has also presented itself over the years at the “Pivobraní” beer festival, where its exhibits have always been a great success.
