Valašské Meziříčí
The town, which is the gateway to the Moravian-Silesian Beskydy Mountains, lies at the confluence of the Rožnovská and Vsetínská Bečva rivers. The town abounds with many monuments, such as the Žerotín Chateau. Originally a Renaissance chateau, it was rebuilt in Baroque style in the 18th century. Between 1885 and 1909 it served as a prison for women. It now houses a theatre hall, the basement M-Club, a period exhibition tracing the history of the noble Žerotín family and the Museum and Gallery Centre, where art and historical exhibitions are held.
In Valašské Meziříčí there is also the Kinský Chateau, once an Empire chateau and until the 18th century a wooden chateau, later rebuilt into a manor house. It also includes a large park with rare trees and an amphitheatre used for concerts and as a summer cinema. The castle has been a museum since 1949.
An important monument of the town is the Church of the Holy Trinity, which formerly served as a Renaissance cemetery church. Now it houses a lapidarium of statues. You can also visit the Moravian Tapestry Manufactory, the only one of its kind in Moravia and Silesia. Here they professionally restore historical tapestries and weave new ones according to artistic designs. The observatory on the Stínadla hill should not be forgotten. It was opened to the public in 1955. The historical building of the wooden Ballner Observatory, which dates back to 1929, has been reconstructed. You can take your children to the Museum of Wallachian Haunts, where you can meet supernatural creatures and characters from Wallachian legends and fairy tales.
